District Initiative- 3x3 Walk Throughs
A new District initiative began last year and will continue this year called a 3X3 Walk-Through. This is not a teacher evaluation tool but a diagnostic for the health of our District's teaching and learning practices. Administrators are looking at three criteria; engagement, purpose and best practices in these snapshot visits.

You will experience administrators making short three minute visits to your classrooms. They may carry index cards to record some ideas. They will be recording what types of practices are occurring. Some examples are cooperative learning, differentiated instruction, research, and use of manipulatives. These cards are not to have names, negative comments, or evaluations. Because this is not an individual's evaluation, informal or otherwise, barring safety issues, an administrator with negative comments should never approach teachers. Positive comments however are always welcomed.

It is understood a three - minute snapshot can never be an indicator of an overall day. We were assured the cards will be destroyed monthly after administration analyze the overall picture. The intent is to get an indication of teaching and learning techniques being implemented in the District to drive staff development and share best practices.

We have talents that often go unnoticed. We want administration to know the great things that go on in every building. We also feel very protective about our autonomy in the classroom. The 3X3s are acceptable contractually and we trust the practice will coincide with the intent. If you have a dissimilar experience please speak with your building reps. You are skilled professionals with extraordinary talents you draw on everyday. This is an opportunity for you to shine and share your wealth of expertise.

Have a powerful year.

In Solidarity,
Robin Brennan
